Voices in Justice: Parole Reform in Scotland: Consultation Analysis - easy read version

In 2025 a consultation was held, Voices in Justice - a Consultation on parole reform in Scotland. It asked victims, people in custody, justice professionals, and the wider public for their views on the parole system. This document is the summary of those response in easy read format.


What people told us about the parole system

People’s understanding of parole

Everyone agreed that there should be information to explain what parole is for.

They said that this would make the system

  • easier to use
  • more consistent
  • more open and honest

People said that information about parole should talk about

  • what parole is
  • how it works
  • its rules

Safety for the public and victims were important in deciding parole.

Helping the person in custody back into society was also important.

Organisations and some people said that podcasts and videos could help more people understand parole.

Some prisoners and ex-prisoners said they would prefer leaflets or telephone helplines.
