Fisheries Management Measures within Scottish Inshore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Proposed Priority Marine Feature (PMF) Management Areas - High level Site Summary Details and Potential Impacts of Proposed Fisheries Management Measures

Overview of site and area details and potential impacts of the proposed fisheries management measures within Scottish Inshore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and proposed Priority Marine Feature (PMF) management areas

23. West Highlands Scottish Marine Region MPAs

Due to the complexity and large number of areas and sites, ecosystem services data has been produced at a regional level, allowing for a more consistent assessment across wider geographical scales while still capturing key variations in ecological, social, and economic value.

The proposed management measures for Small Isles NCMPA are as follows:

Option 1:

  • Demersal trawl and mechanical dredge by vessels with engine power over 500 KW prohibited throughout site
  • Demersal trawl and mechanical dredge by vessels with engine power 500 KW or less permitted in part of the site
  • Longlines (until technical measures come into force) prohibited in overlapping areas with Rum SPA
  • Full site closure to demersal seine net and beam trawls, set nets (including fyke nets) and hydraulic dredge.

Figure 199. Map of measures proposed under option 1:

Option 1 map shows the Small Isles Nature Conservation Marine Protected Area (NCMPA) covering the waters surrounding Canna and Sanday, and Rum. Large areas of burrowed mud surround the northern, eastern and western coasts of Rum, stretching towards the edge of the MPA to the east and north. To the west they stretch past Canna and Sanday. Between Rum and Sanday there is a mixture of burrowed mud, circalittoral sand and mud communities and a horse mussel bed. A concentration of Fan mussel point records exists in this area, primarily north of the horse mussel beds but also across it with two further records to the south. North of rum there is another circalittoral sand and mud communities area. Northwest and southwest of Canna and Sanday there are two northern sea fan and sponge communities, with two larger such communities north of Rum. The area has zoned measures. One zone comprises the waters between Rum and Canna and Sanday, the two northern sea fan and sponge communities north of Rum, and the two northern sea fan and sponge communities west of Canna and Sanday, as well as most of the open waters southwest of here. In this zone demersal trawls, demersal seine nets, beam trawls, mechanical dredges, hydraulic dredges, and set nets (including fyke nets) are prohibited. In the remaining areas demersal seine nets, beam trawls, hydraulic dredges, and set nets (including fyke nets) are prohibited. demersal trawls and mechanical dredges are permitted in this area only for vessels with engine power of 500kw or less.

Figure 200. Map of measures proposed under option 1:

Longline Map: Map shows option 1 longline prohibition for the Small Isles Nature Conservation Marine Protected Area (NCMPA) from the overlap with the Rum SPA. The site is located around Canna and Sanday and Rum. This is to accompany the other map showing other fisheries management measures from the Small Isles NCMPA. The site includes a large shaded area around Rum and part of Canna and Sanday to show where longlines would be prohibited. Depth shading indicates zones from 10-200 and 200-400m

Option 2:*

  • Full site closure to demersal trawl and seine, beam trawls, mechanical dredge, hydraulic dredge and set nets (including fyke nets)

Figure 201. Map of measures proposed under option 2:

Option 2 map shows the Small Isles Nature Conservation Marine Protected Area (NCMPA) covering the waters surrounding Canna and Sanday, and Rum. There is a full site prohibition of all demersal mobile gear and set nets (including fyke nets).

*The measures for Option 2 proposals only come from gear types prohibited in non-overlapping areas. Overlapping restrictions may still apply from overlapping sites or areas dependent on the decisions taken for that site or area.
