Fisheries Management Measures within Scottish Inshore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Proposed Priority Marine Feature (PMF) Management Areas - High level Site Summary Details and Potential Impacts of Proposed Fisheries Management Measures

Overview of site and area details and potential impacts of the proposed fisheries management measures within Scottish Inshore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and proposed Priority Marine Feature (PMF) management areas

20. Shetland Isles and North and West Shetland Shelf Marine Regions

Due to the complexity and large number of areas and sites, ecosystem services data has been produced at a regional level, allowing for a more consistent assessment across wider geographical scales while still capturing key variations in ecological, social, and economic value.

Figure 159. Map of measures proposed under option 1:

Map shows option 1 for the Fetlar to Haroldswick Nature Conservation Marine Protected Area (NCMPA), covering the waters surrounding Fetlar, as far north as Haroldswick, and west into the adjacent voes. The majority of the area is composed of circalittoral sand and coarse sediment communities, with kelp and seaweed communities on sublittoral sediment patches near Sand Wick, north of Uyea, west of Balta, and in Basta Voe. A large area of maerl beds and horse mussel beds (mosaic) is found west of Fetlar, and maerl beds are found east of Uyea. The area has two zones for measures. The deeper waters along the east of the MPA stretching north from Ramnageo to Haroldswick and the area surrounding the north, west, and south of Fetlar (except the Wick of Tresta, Wick of Gruting, and the waters immediately east of the eastern coast) make up one zone. In this zone set nets (including fyke nets) and hydraulic dredge are prohibited. Shallow tide swept sands with burrowing bivalves are found in the Wick of Tresta, near Vatsetter, and near Belmont. A large area of maerl beds and horse mussel beds (mosaic) is found west of Fetlar, and maerl beds are found east of Uyea. There is a full site closure for demersal trawl and seine, beam trawl, hydraulic dredge, mechanical dredge and set nets (including fyke nets).

The area does not extend much to the west in the north, cutting around Sound Gruney and Hascosay. Throughout the area longlines (until technical measures come into force) and hydraulic dredges are prohibited. Set nets (including fyke nets) are prohibited in overlapping area with the Fetlar to Haroldswick NCMPA

A full site level of protection from the specified gear has been identified as the only suitable option in enabling the achievement of the desired level of protection for the feature in question.

*This site will have other demersal mobile measures that may apply from the overlapping portions with the Fetlar to Haroldswick NCMPA that aren’t shown on the map for this option.

Fetlar to Haroldswick NCMPA has zoned measures for demersal trawl and seine, beam trawl and mechanical dredge. Measures would depend on where overlap occurs.

Please check the Option 1 or single management overlapping site map to see proposed demersal mobile measures under Option 1.

Overlapping sites included in this consultation

This SPA overlaps the Fetlar to Haroldswick NCMPA and Bluemull and Colgrave Sounds SPA.

The proposed management measures for Seas off Foula SPA are as follows:

Option 1:

  • Set nets (including fyke nets) prohibited all year in areas down to 177m based on presence and maximum dive depth for guillemot.
  • Pelagic set nets prohibited in areas deeper than 177m based on presence of guillemot.
  • Full site closure to longlines (until technical measures come into force) and hydraulic dredge.

Figure 180. Map of measures proposed under option 1:

Map shows Seas off Foula SPA, a large area of waters expanding in all directions from Foula, mostly to the west. The SPA does not cover the waters immediately surrounding Foula, which are covered by Foula SPA, rather it commences where Foula SPA terminates. Most of the SPA is shallower than 177m, with the exception of the northwesternmost tip and a trench running through the far west of the area from southwest to northeast. In these deeper areas pelagic set nets are prohibited. In the shallower majority of the site set nets (including fyke nets) are prohibited. Longlines (until technical measures come into force) and hydraulic dredges are prohibited throughout the site.

Option 2:

  • Full site closure to longlines (until technical measures come into force), set nets (including fyke nets) and hydraulic dredge.
