Notes:

Children are counted once for each centre and/or childminder they attend.

Childminder figures are outwith the scope of National Statistics. In 2008, this information was based on data obtained in the Childminder survey. In 2009 and 2010, this was based on data obtained in the Care Commission's December 2008 and 2009 Annual Returns respectively. The data have been weighted up to the total number of registered childminders in Scotland listed by the Commission, excluding those that are inactive. More detail on the methodology used is available in the background notes.

Some centres do not provide information on the number of children attending. In 2010, where possible, information from 2009 has been carried forward. However, this was not possible for 39 centres. Therefore, the median number of children attending has been used (based on centres who submitted a full census form)

All figures are rounded to the nearest 10 to express the uncertainty inherent in these estimates. For this reason, totals may not exactly equal the sum of their parts.

Childminder figures for January 2009 have been revised.
