Notes:

Children are counted once for each centre and/or childminder they attend.

Childminder figures are outwith the scope of National Statistics. They are based on completed Care Commission December 2009 Annual Returns. The data have been weighted up to the total number of registered childminders in Scotland listed by the Commission, excluding those that are inactive (x) as at January 2010. More detail on the methodology used is available in the background notes.
423 centres did not provide information on the number of children attending. Where possible, the information used for these centres in 2009 in relation to the number of children has been carried forward. Where information is not available from 2009 (39 centres), the median number of children attending has been used (based on those centres who submitted a full census form).

All figures are rounded to the nearest 10 to express the uncertainty inherent in these estimates. For this reason, totals may not exactly equal the sum of their parts.
