National Transitions to Adulthood - strategy for young disabled people: supplementary report - easy read

Easy read version of the supplementary report to the Transitions Strategy. It sets out actions and commitments across key policy areas, showing how work to improve transitions for young disabled people and the Transitions Strategy are delivered.

Employment

Work gives people:

  • purpose – having something important to do
  • independence
  • a way to belong and feel part of something

Young disabled people looking for a job must:

  • have choices and chances
  • have support and advice that is:
  • person-centred – this means that staff listen to what a person wants and needs and have them at the centre of decisions
  • coordinated – this means that services link and work well together
  • ambitious – this means the support service will help them:
    • do want they want to do
    • develop skills
    • try new things

What we will do next

  • keep giving money to support the work in the No One Left Behind report

The report explains how the Scottish Government and local councils will deliver person-centred support to help people get jobs.

  • support young disabled people in apprenticeships – these are jobs where you learn new skills, get experience and get paid

This includes extra funding in 2025 to 2026 for young disabled people aged 20 to 29 doing Modern Apprenticeships.

  • the Post 16 education and skills reform programme will include transitions as part of making careers support better
  • Skills Development Scotland will have learning opportunities and peer support

This means supporting staff to learn from their own experiences to help each other make support better for young disabled people

This will:

  • make sure that staff understand how to better support young people with additional support needs into future opportunities
  • increase the knowledge and skills of the support staff working in Careers, Information and Guidance
