National Transitions to Adulthood - strategy for young disabled people: supplementary report - easy read

Easy read version of the supplementary report to the Transitions Strategy. It sets out actions and commitments across key policy areas, showing how work to improve transitions for young disabled people and the Transitions Strategy are delivered.

Education

Education is an important part of everyone’s skills for life.

But it does not work well for many young disabled people.

Scotland’s education system is supporting transitions to adulthood by:

  • recognising that everyone has different:
    • needs
    • aspirations – what they want to achieve
    • ways to work on their aspirations
  • make sure that every learner is prepared for life after education

What we will do next

School education

  • work on actions from the Additional Support for Learning review

This includes asking people what they think about the Supporting Learners Code of Practice by March 2026.

A Code of Practice is a set of rules that explain how people should behave when they are at work.

  • work with Education Scotland to include the needs of young disabled people in the development of the Curriculum Improvement Cycle (CIC)

The CIC works to improve the things that people learn in school and college.

  • protect the number of teachers including those who support children and young people with disabilities or additional support needs
  • make the next Additional Support for Learning Progress Report by March 2026

The report goes to the Additional Support for Learning Project Board and explains:

  • what work that is happening
  • what difference the work is making

Colleges and universities

  • in 2026 we will publish a report about the consultation on support for part-time and disabled students

A consultation is when we ask you what you think about something and listen to what you have to say.

We will think about what we can do next to make this support better.

  • we will think about how to use information from the Student Finance and Wellbeing Study so we can make better policies about college and university education
  • we have given Corseford College an extra 1 million 400 hundred thousand pounds for 2 more years

Coresford College has 35 students with complex and additional needs.

  • we will keep checking the experiences of disabled students using National Equality Outcomes
