Scotland's Vision for Trade: annual report January 2026

Our fourth annual report on the implementation of Scotland's Vision for Trade (the Vision). This report details the progress we have made since our last annual report in October 2024, as well as highlights and challenges from the five years since the original publication of the Vision in 2021.

Conclusion

In the last five years we have witnessed huge economic developments and significant global turmoil, the pace of which has increased since we last reported on the Vision in December 2024. These developments have had significant consequences for the trading environment and the people of Scotland.

The Scottish Government has been guided throughout by the Vision, allowing us to maintain a clear-eyed focus on Scotland’s economic interests, while taking a principle-based approach, and to understand the role of trade in relation to broader and multifaceted challenges.

As we look towards the future, there is little to suggest that the challenges will be any less complex. We must continue to build on the legacy of the Vision, building on our successes and continuing to apply our distinct, principled approach to the issues we face.
