Environment and Forestry Directorate

What we do

The Environment and Forestry Directorate leads work to restore our natural environment, reduce resource use and ensure that we live within our planet’s climate and ecological limits.

We are responsible for:

  • providing expertise to enable policy teams and our public bodies to deliver their strategic objectives. We provide strategic framework via problem solving, supporting and challenging others, encouraging collaboration and providing assurance for ministers
  • providing a clear policy framework to drive the recovery of biodiversity, maximise the potential of nature-based solutions and build Scotland’s resilience to climate change
  • working with others to provide a policy, legislative, regulatory and funding framework to protect the quality of Scotland's environment and deliver a circular economy
  • providing robust and accessible analysis and statistics to inform policy development across Agriculture and Rural Economy and Environment and Forestry Directorates
