What we do

We work to protect and enhance Scotland’s natural environment and resources and to provide scientific support and an integrated evidence base for rural and environment policies.  

We are responsible for:

  • biodiversity and species protection
  • ending our throw away culture and promoting a circular economy
  • improving environmental quality and addressing environmental risks
  • providing timely and impactful evidence which drives policy in the ECCLR and RE portfolios
  • providing leadership to our delivery partners through Environment and Economy Leaders’ Group (EELG) which brings together the family of environment and other land-based public bodies with Scottish Government Directors 
  • strategic sponsorship of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, Scottish Natural Heritage, Cairngorms National Park Authority, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority,  the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, the Central Scotland Green Network Trust and Zero Waste Scotland 
  • protecting, maintaining and enhancing environmental standards as the UK exits the EU
