What we do

We work to protect and enhance our forests, landscapes, biodiversity, water and soils.

We are responsible for:

  • protecting Scotland's landscapes, habitats and biodiversity
  • ensuring Scotland's land is used effectively
  • ensuring Scotland's woodlands and greenspace are managed sustainably
  • ensuring Scotland has pollution-free air and water resources and safe drinking water
  • recycling goods and materials and managing radioactive material safely and effectively
  • being the sponsor directorate for the Cairngorms National Park Authority, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Scottish Environment Protection Agency, Scottish Natural Heritage, Scottish Water and the Water Industry Commission for Scotland
