Introduction

This publication presents final results from the June Agricultural Census 2025 on land use, crop areas, livestock, and the agricultural workforce. This year’s census also included a module on irrigation practices, and drought and flood management strategies.

The June Agricultural Census is completed as at 1 June each year. Where appropriate, results for 2025 are compared with a 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 five-year average. This allows for a comparison between the current year and average trends in the farming sector over a recent time period.

In addition to the statistics on agriculture presented here, the June Agricultural Census is used to develop and tailor policies to support the agricultural sector in Scotland, for example, the Agricultural Reform Programme. Other uses of the data from the June Agricultural Census include environmental research and supporting actions to help the welfare or quality of animals, plants and soil.

Please note that the June Agricultural Census did not take place in 2022 due to improvement work around the census. The estimated 2022 results are based on administrative data and results in adjacent years. For further information, please see the methodology report

The figures presented within the text and charts of this publication are rounded. For exact values, please refer to the accompanying data tables available in the supporting documents.
