Number of pigs continue to decrease
In 2025, the total number of pigs was 312,300, a 7.3% decrease when compared with the five-year average.
The number of breeding herd pigs (sows in pig, gilts in pig, and other sows) was 25,600, a 21% decrease when compared with the five-year average. The number of barren sows for fattening, gilts for breeding (over 50kg) and boars was 5,200, a 31% decrease on the five-year average.
For ‘other pigs’ (liveweight pigs) there was a 5.2% decrease on the five-year to 281,500.
