Quantities

Quantity = total area (June Agricultural Census) x average yield (various)

Yields for leeks, cabbage, lettuce and rhubarb are obtained from Defra’s British Horticultural Survey. From 2017, yields for carrots, turnips and swedes, cauliflower, broccoli, sprouts, peas and beans are also sourced from Defra’s British Horticultural Survey. Prior to 2017 yields were taken from Surveys carried out by the Scottish Rural College (SRuC).

Early yields for the year are available but maincrop yields are not be available until the following year and are revised.

Others (in the open) and mixed (in the open) yields are the average of all other vegetable yields (excluding tomato and mushroom yields).

Tomato yield is estimated using index data from Defra’s British Horticultural Survey.

Mushroom yields have been kept constant since the last mushroom survey in 2004. We are investigating sourcing other information.

Prices

Prices for carrots, turnips, cauliflower, broccoli, sprouts and tomatoes are sourced from the Glasgow Fruit Market.

Prices for leeks, cabbage, and lettuce are estimated using the previous year’s data multiplied by the Defra Leek and lettuce price indices.

Others (in the open) and mixed (in the open) prices per tonne are the average of all other vegetable prices per tonne (excluding tomato and mushroom prices).

Value of Output

Total output value = sum of all the listed vegetables output values.

Vegetable output value = vegetable output x vegetable price

Forecasts

For forecast yields we use the change in yields from the CPDS.
