Supporting Children's Learning - Code of Practice: easy read summary

Duties of education authorities and other organisations

The law says school education authorities must give children and young people the extra support they need in their area. They must:

  • Find out who has extra support needs.
  • Give information on how they find out and review the additional support needs of children and young people.
  • Give parents, children or young people information about extra support needs and services available.
  • Make a support plan for people with extra support needs and review it regularly.
  • Arrange to deal with disagreements about additional support needs.
  • Support children and young people during transitions. Transitions are important changes in life like growing up and moving from children to adult services.

Education authorities must give extra support to disabled pre-school children. Children under the age of 3 if they have extra support needs.

Other organisations like health boards, Skills Development Scotland or colleges must help the education authority to give extra support if they are asked.

Skills Development Scotland is a service in Scotland. They help people plan their future, learn new skills, and get a job.

The other organisations must follow their own rules on the extra support.
