Rights of children, young people and parents
The law says that parents and young people have rights. The right to:
- Ask the education authority to assess whether the child has extra support needs.
- Get information and advice about the child’s extra support needs.
- Get help with disagreements over education support. This is called a mediation service.
- Ask the education authority to assess whether the child needs a support plan.
Children can speak up and ask for their own rights if:
- They are grown-up enough to understand their rights.
- Using their rights would not have a bad effect on their emotional, physical or social wellbeing.
