Results from the Scottish Agricultural Census: June 2026

Final results from the 2026 June Agricultural Census on land use, crop areas, livestock and the people working on agricultural holdings. Modular results on cattle housing, technology, feed supplements, and peatlands also included.


Total number of pigs increases for first time since 2022, remains below five-year average

In 2026, the total number of pigs was 327,700, a 4.9% increase when compared with the previous year. When compared with the five-year average, the total number of pigs in 2026 decreased by 1.2%.    

The number of breeding herd pigs (sows in pig, gilts in pig, and other sows) was 26,500, a 13% decrease when compared with the five-year average. The number of barren sows for fattening, gilts for breeding (over 50kg) and boars was 6,400, a 14% decrease compared with the five-year average.

For ‘other pigs’ (under 50kg, 50kg to under 80kg and 80kg and over liveweight pigs), there was a 0.3% increase to 294,800 pigs when compared with the five-year average. In this category, the number of under 50kg liveweight pigs increased by 12% to 209,200 pigs when compared with the five-year average.
