Appendix 4: SHeS 2016-2019 – Living in urban or rural settings

A: Mental wellbeing by age and urban or rural
Mental wellbeing was lowest in the 'urban' group with mean WEMWBS scores of 51.6 for 65-69 year olds, 51.1 for 70-74 year olds and 50.2 for 75+. For those in the 'rural' group the figures were 53.1, 53.2 and 50.8 respectively.
B: Possible psychiatric disorder by age and urban or rural
For those in the 'urban' health group, 13% in the 65-69 year old group showed symptoms of possible psychiatric disorder, 12% in the 70-74 year olds and 12% in 75+. For those in the 'rural' health group, the percentages were 6%, 7% and 12% respectively.
C: 2 or more anxiety symptoms by age and urban or rural
For those in the 'urban' group, 8% of 65-69 year olds displayed 2 or more anxiety symptoms, 10% of 70-74 year olds and 7% of those 75+. The figures for  those in the 'rural' group were 9%, 2% and 10% respectively.
D: 2 or more depression symptoms by age and urban or rural
For those in the 'urban' group, 5% of 65-69 year olds displayed 2 or more depression symptoms, 11% of 70-74 year olds and 8% of those 75+. The figures for those in the 'rural' group were 10%, 0% and 8% respectively.
