Part 1. Purpose, Principles and Objectives

This consultation suggests how we plan to make legal aid better. We think legal aid should be based on a purpose, principles and objectives.

Purpose says what the legal aid system is for. This will help keep the system moving in the same direction.

Principles are rules or standards. They will guide decisions and how legal aid will work. They will stay the same over time.

Objectives are the goals we want, or actions needed. These might change if people’s needs change.

The Board will still answer to Scottish Ministers. Scottish Ministers will decide the purpose, principles and update the objectives.
