Cost of legal aid

Legal aid in Scotland:

  • can be used for any matter of Scottish law
  • costs a lot.

The cost is going up. The cost can go up when:

  • more people need help
  • cases are more difficult
  • legal aid covers more types of help.

Changes to legal aid must:

  • help people access justice
  • make sure it can be paid for in the future.

This means public money must be used well for the people who need it most.
