We asked you about conversion practices – this is what you told us Easy Read Version
An easy read version of the responses to the Scottish Government's consultation on ending conversion practices.
Intention
Your intention means something that you want to achieve.
Some respondents supported the proposals including intention to change or suppress sexual orientation or gender identity.
They thought it was important to have laws that stop conversion practices that force people to act a certain way or hide parts of themselves.
Many respondents who supported proposals felt that they would not stop parents and religious leaders from giving advice and guidance.
Other respondents were worried that something could be seen as a crime when:
- there is no intention to cause harm
- the actions are done by a person or group that wants to help or protect someone
They were also worried that it would only be possible to talk to someone about sexual orientation and gender identity in a positive way.
The Scottish Government says that they will think about these points more.
They are working to find a balance so that people:
- are protected from harm
- they are not stopped from talking about their sexual orientation or gender identity beliefs if they are not causing harm
