Scotland continues to play a key role in international salmon conservation through its contributions to the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation (NASCO), the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), and the Commission of the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic (OSPAR).

In 2025, Scottish Government officials (as part of the UK Delegation) and Non-Governmental Organisations, including Delivery Group members, Fisheries Management Scotland and Atlantic Salmon Trust (as accredited observers), participated in the 42nd Annual Meeting of NASCO in Cardiff, Wales.

Agreements were made to maintain management measures for the West Greenland and the Faroes salmon fisheries and new guidelines on stock rebuilding and gene banking were agreed, to help understand the appropriateness of techniques and how to maximise effectiveness. The Wild Atlantic Salmon Atlas, an interactive online map showing information on the status of Atlantic salmon across the North Atlantic was launched and the Scottish Government provided examples of successful actions in a paper for a Special Session sharing progress.

In preparation for NASCO’s new Reporting Cycle (2026-2032), the Scottish Government committed to setting out actions to address stressors facing wild salmon and engaged with the Delivery Group to progress this commitment.
