UK innovation survey 2021: results for Scotland

Innovation Activity – by Sector

Figure 6: Businesses in the ‘Scientific Research and Development’ sector were the most likely to be innovation active in Scotland (79.3%) and the UK (76.1%). Businesses in the ‘Real estate services’ and ‘Accommodation and food services’ sectors were the least likely to be innovation active in Scotland (24.0% and 24.2% respectively).

A similar pattern was found for broader innovators and wider innovators (Table 4).

Figure 7: In 2018-2020, Scottish businesses within the broad sector ‘Manufacturing’ (29.4%) were the most likely to perform product innovation.  Businesses in the ‘Construction’ sector were least likely (9.1%).  Businesses in the ‘Manufacturing’ sector were also the most likely to perform process innovation (22.5%), and ‘Accommodation and food services’ businesses were the least likely (5.3%).
