Transforming Roles paper 9: allied health professions advanced practice
Guidance for developing Allied Health Professions (AHP) advanced practice roles in Scotland. Outlines policy context, role definition, education pathways, governance, and impact metrics to support consistent, sustainable workforce transformation across health and social care.
Annex 4: Performance Indicators
The measurement of performance should link to the seven standards of Clinical Governance[28].
HIS Standards of Governance
Data and Information
The lawful and safe use of data, including digital technology, to support and improve care and protect confidentiality.
Service user and patient involvement
Enabling people to make informed choices about their care, share feedback and influence service improvements.
Staffing and Staff Management
An organisation’s values, behaviours, purpose and priorities, accountability of all staff, transparency in processes, decisions and actions.
Education and Training
The support and supervision required to deliver safe, effective person-centred care.
Clinical audit and quality improvement
The system in place to monitor and improve the quality and safety of clinical care.
Risk Management and Safety
The processes and policies in place to identify and respond to risks and concerns relating to the safety of care.
Clinical effectiveness
The provision of evidence-based care that meets individual needs, translates research into practice and measure outcomes to assess benefits and costs.
It is helpful to consider metrics under two main headings:
Service Performance Indicators are used to measure and monitor the performance of healthcare services. They provide a standardised way to assess how well services are meeting their objectives, identify areas for improvement, and ensure consistency across the system
Quality Performance Indicators are specific, measurable aspects of healthcare that are used to assess the quality of care provided. They act as benchmarks against which the performance of services can be monitored.
The following are examples of performance indicators that may be used to articulate the clinical impact of an advanced practice role or service.
