Director of Mental Health
Hugh McAloon was appointed Interim Director of Mental Health in early 2022.
Responsibilities
The Director of Mental Health is responsible for policy and Scottish Government operational responsibilities in relation to mental health, neurodiversity and dementia.
Biography
Hugh joined the civil service in 1990 and has held a range of statistician and policy roles, including for the former Department for International Development. These were in areas such as macroeconomic statistics, aid statistics, higher education policy, youth employment, employability, skills and fair work.
More recently, Hugh has worked as a deputy director across the range of mental health, neurodiversity and dementia policy areas covered by the Mental Health Directorate. He jointly led the directorate’s response to the pandemic before becoming the Interim Director at the start of 2022.
