Supporting Scotland's Transition - Land Use and Agriculture: Technical Supporting Document

This document provides additional context to the consultation on a draft Land use and Agriculture Just Transition Plan. The Plan sets out how we are working towards achieving Scotland’s Net Zero ambitions in a fair and just way for people and communities working in or with our land-based industries.

Section 1 - The important role of land and agriculture in Scotland

In section 1 of the consultation document, we provided an infographic overview of some of the key statistics that affect the islands and rural* areas of Scotland, but that is just a very small part of a very big picture. The geographic and demographic diversity across rural Scotland presents a mix of challenges and opportunities and we hope the following information provides further insight into these. For ease of reading, and as we have done within the consultation document, we have grouped this information into relevant themes around land use in Scotland: Jobs, Skills and Economy; Environment and Adaptation; Communities and Place; and People and Equity. However, we do appreciate many of the statistics presented here may be equally relevant across multiple themes.

*A definition of ‘rural Scotland’ can be found on the Scottish Government website.
