Organic Farming in Scotland: 2025

Statistics on organic land use, crop areas, livestock and the number of organic operators.


Key points 

In 2025: 

  • The total organic land area (in-conversion and fully organic) in Scotland was 168,200 hectares, a 28% increase compared with 2024, and a 62% increase compared with 2021. This represented 3.3% of the total agricultural area in Scotland in 2025.  

  • 115,800 hectares were farmed fully organically in Scotland, an increase of 10% compared with 2024 and 29% compared with 2021.  

  • 52,400 hectares were in-conversion to become organic farming land, around double the area compared with 2024 and over three times the area compared with 2021.  

  • 49% of total organic land area in Scotland was in the Highlands and Islands, 24% in Southern Scotland, 16% in Eastern Scotland, 6.0% in North Eastern Scotland, 5.2% in East Central Scotland, and 0.2% in West Central Scotland. 

  • Permanent pasture (including rough grazing) accounted for 83% of fully organic land area in Scotland, covering 96,100 hectares. 

  • The increase in Scotland’s fully organic land area in 2025 was mainly due to the increase in permanent pasture (including rough grazing).  

  • 4.3% of fully organic land in Scotland was used to grow cereals (4,900 hectares). 

  • The proportion of cattle, sheep, and poultry farmed organically in Scotland was between 2% and 3%. The proportion of pigs farmed organically remained low at 0.2%.
