National Transitions to Adulthood Strategy for Young Disabled People - Easy Read

The Scottish Government and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) are pleased to present the Easy Read version of Scotland’s first National Transitions to Adulthood Strategy for young disabled people.

Who the strategy will be for

This strategy focuses on planning and support for young disabled people in Scotland aged between 14 and 25 years old.

This strategy uses the Equality Act 2010 definition of disability. This covers a range of conditions and illnesses.

This strategy is based on the social model of disability. This was developed by disabled people. This says that people are disabled by barriers in society and not by their condition.

We use the words disabled person rather than person with disabilities in this strategy. We know that different people have different preferences in how they identify. We respect this.

The main point of this strategy is to encourage support which helps to remove barriers so that young disabled people can have a good transition to young adult life.
