National Transitions to Adulthood Strategy for Young Disabled People - Easy Read

The Scottish Government and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) are pleased to present the Easy Read version of Scotland’s first National Transitions to Adulthood Strategy for young disabled people.

Priority 4: High-quality Transitions Practices

What this means

There should be the same high standards for transitions support in every part of Scotland. We want to support this by:

  • helping local areas use ARC Scotland’s Principles of Good Transitions
  • making sure that what we learn from and share good transitions support across Scotland.

Why this is important

The choices young disabled people make as they move to young adult life will be different for each person.

Using the Principles of Good Transitions can help to provide:

  • the same high standards for transitions across Scotland
  • opportunities to share learning to help improve young disabled people’s experiences of their transition to young adult life.

What is already happening

The Scottish Government has been funding ARC Scotland since 2013 to support their work on transitions. This includes developing the Principles of Good Transitions.

ARC Scotland are also working with local organisations on Principles into Practice. This uses the Principles of Good Transitions to helps organisations to have better outcomes for young people making the transition to adulthood.

ARC Scotland have also created a digital tool called Compass. This can be used by young disabled people to help to plan for their future. And by parents, carers and staff to find information and support for transitions.

Compass also collects feedback from users about their experience. This can help improve future support.

We will continue to support ARC Scotland to work across Scotland.

What else we will do

We will work across Scottish Government departments and with other organisations to help them all think about good transitions.

We will look at what training staff need. This is for those involved in planning and supporting transitions.
