Total income from farming estimates: 2025

Total income from farming (TIFF) is the official measure of the profit gained by the agricultural industry in Scotland. It provides a breakdown of the value of farm production, support payments and costs. An Accredited Official Statistics publication for Scotland.

First published: 30 April 2026.

Total support payments decrease in real terms

Total support payments to farming is estimated at £589 million in 2025. Estimates of support payments in total income from farming are calendar year estimates.

Total support payments to farming decreased by 6% in 2025 in real terms. This decrease was mostly driven by the fixed rate of the Basic Payment Scheme, which did not increase with inflation.

Most support payments are made through the Basic Payment Scheme. This is a support payment made for farming activity. Total payments from the Basic Payment scheme are estimated at £274 million in 2025.

Other support payments are included in Table 4, including ‘Greening’ which supports environmental sustainability and the ‘Less Favoured Area Support Scheme (LFASS)’ which is a support payment paid to those farming in upland and remote areas where there are natural disadvantages.

Support payments captured in the total income from farming accounts do not include capital grants to farmers. For example, the Future Farm Investment Scheme is not included. This, alongside other minor differences in reporting means that payment totals reported here may differ from payment totals in other reporting. Calendar year estimates for support payments made to farming that are not included in the accounts are available for comparison alongside this release in the table “Total income from farming estimates 2018-2025 – Agricultural support payments” under Supporting Documents.
