Key points
- Total income from farming (TIFF) is the total profit from all farming businesses in the agricultural industry in Scotland. It provides a breakdown of the value of farm production, support payments and costs. This publication contains initial estimates for 2025. At the time of publication, not all data are available for 2025. These estimates are subject to a degree of revision in future years as more data becomes available.
- Initial estimates for 2025 predict the highest on record figures for total income from farming of around £1.5 billion. Total income is estimated to increase £0.3 billion (28%) compared to 2024. In real terms, adjusted for inflation, this is a 24% increase.
- A higher profit margin in 2025 is driven by output value rising to a record £5.1 billion. Continuing high commodity prices, including increases in cattle, milk and potato prices in 2025 drive gross output to rise 8% above the previous year.
- Meanwhile, total costs are predicted to remain relatively stable, increasing by 1% to £4.1 billion in 2025.
- Total support payments to farms have remained stable in recent years at around £0.6 billion. This is driven by the fixed rate of the Basic Payment Scheme, which did not increase with inflation. In real terms, this is a 4% decrease in value between 2024 and 2025.
- Support payments account for 40% of profit from all farming in 2025. Over the last ten years (2016 to 2025) support payments have accounted for around 64% of profit from farming on average.
