How to achieve this vision - the 2045 just transition outcomes

To make our vision happen we will have to reach lots of outcomes together. Outcomes are the results we want to get from our actions. Our proposed outcomes are:

Jobs, skills and economy: Scotland produces food in a way that is not harmful to the environment. Rural areas are good places to live where people can get good jobs. Communities benefit from nature and tourism.

Environment and adaptation: Businesses and farms reduce waste and pollution. This helps wildlife and deals with climate change. More trees and hedges are planted. Peat bogs and coastal areas are protected.

Communities and place: Rural communities are given new life and a strong future. They have a bigger say in how local resources and land are used. The money made from the surrounding countryside is put back into communities.

People and equality: Farmers are helped to make the changes needed for Net Zero. People are healthier and happier. They can access open spaces and affordable, healthy food.

Beginning the journey towards our future vision

It is important to have a long-term vision and outcomes. But we also need to start the journey somewhere. People told us that a just transition must happen in stages. This means we need to take action soon.

We have produced a set of short-term goals:

Land-based education and training will show people how to make the changes needed for a net zero Scotland. This will make sure people can live and work on our land for generations to come.

We will make sure Scotland’s land benefits those who live and work on it. We will look for ways that everyone in rural communities can share the success. They feel part of Scotland’s future.

We will work with businesses and rural communities to find new ways to deal with the issues they face.

We will work to reduce rural poverty and inequalities. We will try to improve everyone’s health and wellbeing.

We will support land use and farming in Scotland. We will make sure that information we give out is clear. It will make sure all of Scotland gets the same message.
