Scottish prison population: statistics 2019 to 2020

This publication explores the characteristics of imprisoned people in Scotland. Following several years of sustained decrease, the prison population has risen sharply since 2017-2018 to an annual average of around 8,200 in 2019-2020.


An errata was published on 18/01/2021 as a result of changes on PDF page 11 to section 3.1. The change made corrected some spelling errors in the text and clarified a poorly drafted sentence. The HTML and PDF have been updated to reflect these changes. In addition a revised set of Data Tables has also been provided, removing heading text in the TOC sheet, and adding a guide to the use of Excel filter functions. Figures in tables and charts have not changed.
