Miscarriage care: patient charter
The patient charter for miscarriage care is a commitment to the miscarriage care you should receive from the NHS in Scotland. It is for both women and partners.
Support, information and care
Healthcare professionals will:
- be compassionate, caring, non-judgemental and respectful
- care for you in a private room wherever possible
- support you through any spaces where you might hear or see pregnant women and babies, if you wish
- give you the information and support you need in a way you understand (including translation and interpreter services and written information)
- answer your questions
- if you need it, explain your options for miscarriage management (treatment) clearly and compassionately
- make sure you understand the risks and benefits of different options so you can make a decision that feels best for you
- support you to make choices about your care
- give you time to decide and support if you change your mind
- follow the National Bereavement Care Pathway (NBCP)
If you choose medical management and have had a missed miscarriage, you should be given 2 tablets - mifepristone and misoprostol. These 2 tablets help the pregnancy tissue come away from your uterus (womb).
