Miscarriage care: patient charter

The patient charter for miscarriage care is a commitment to the miscarriage care you should receive from the NHS in Scotland. It is for both women and partners.

What is a Patient Charter for Miscarriage Care?

The Patient Charter for Miscarriage Care is a commitment to the miscarriage care you should receive from the NHS in Scotland. It is for both women and partners.

On 6 February 2025, the Scottish Government published a Delivery Framework for Miscarriage Care in Scotland. It is based on the graded model of care, an evidence based framework that sets out the support and treatment you should receive after every miscarriage.

The Framework gives Health Boards 34 actions/deliverables to put in place over the next 2 years.

  • 18 of the 34 actions/deliverables within the Framework should be in place by August 2025.
  • 10 further actions/deliverables should be in place by May 2026.
  • The final 6 should be in place by March 2027.

This Charter sets out the miscarriage care you should expect to receive at the moment, based on the 18 actions/deliverables due to have been put in place already.

An updated Charter covering the remaining 16 deliverables will be published in March 2027.

If you are reading this because you are having a miscarriage, you can find the information and support you need right now on NHS inform and in these leaflets. I think I’m having a miscarriage, After a miscarriage and Miscarriage: dads and partners.
