Miscarriage care: patient charter
The patient charter for miscarriage care is a commitment to the miscarriage care you should receive from the NHS in Scotland. It is for both women and partners.
Care after every miscarriage

1 First miscarriage
- Information on bereavement and mental health support
- Personalised advice to support the health of future pregnancies
- Optional entry in Scottish Government/National Records Memorial Book of Pregnancy and Baby Loss Prior to 24 weeks
- Progesterone offered up to 16 weeks if bleeding in future pregnancy
2 Second miscarriage
- Information on bereavement and mental health support
- Personalised advice to support the health of future pregnancies
- Optional entry in Scottish Government/National Records Memorial Book of Pregnancy and Baby Loss Prior to 24 weeks
- Progesterone offered up to 16 weeks if bleeding in future pregnancy
3 Third miscarriage
- Information on bereavement and mental health support
- Personalised advice to support the health of future pregnancies
- Optional entry in Scottish Government/National Records Memorial Book of Pregnancy and Baby Loss Prior to 24 weeks
- Progesterone offered up to 16 weeks if bleeding in future pregnancy
- Offer of ultrasound scan
- Offer of referral to specialist recurrent miscarriage clinic
4 Fourth miscarriage
- Information on bereavement and mental health support
- Personalised advice to support the health of future pregnancies
- Optional entry in Scottish Government/National Records Memorial Book of Pregnancy and Baby Loss Prior to 24 weeks
- Progesterone offered up to 16 weeks if bleeding in future pregnancy
- Offer of ultrasound scan
- Progesterone from confirmed pregnancy test until 12 weeks
- Offer of ultrasound scan at 6 weeks in new pregnancy
- Offer of referral to specialist recurrent miscarriage clinic
After 1 or 2 miscarriages
Your healthcare professional will talk to you about:
- where you can find support after miscarriage
- what you can do to be as healthy as possible in a future pregnancy
- contraception advice if you need it
- the Scottish Government/National Records Memorial Book of Pregnancy and Baby Loss Prior to 24 Weeks
In a future pregnancy you will be offered progesterone pessaries until you are 16 weeks pregnant if you are spotting or bleeding from your vagina and an ultrasound scan has confirmed a new pregnancy is in your womb.Treatment should follow this guidance.
You will be given printed information or links to websites so you can look again later.
After 3 miscarriages
You will also be offered:
- referral to a specialist recurrent miscarriage clinic
- a 3D ultrasound scan to check if there are any problems with your womb (uterus)
- a 2D ultrasound scan if 3D is not available and an MRI scan if doctors think it is needed
After 4 or more miscarriages
If you get pregnant again you will be offered progesterone pessaries:
- after a confirmed pregnancy test
- until you are 12 weeks pregnant
- whether or not you have any bleeding
You will be given an ultrasound scan at 6 weeks to make sure your pregnancy is in the womb. Treatment should follow this guidance.
