Occasional paper: Long-term drivers of and changes in the prison population
This paper explores long-term changes that have taken place which have altered the size and composition of the prison population – with changes both before and following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Data and methodology
This paper is a summary of published data. It largely uses annual statistics on the average daily prison population from the Scottish Government statistical collection on the Prison Population and Projections. A range of other crime and justice statistics produced by the Scottish Government are also drawn upon to provide wider context.
