In 2024, the value of Scotland’s international goods exports decreased by 2% to a value of £18.4 billion since the previous year.
The commodity category with the highest export value in 2024 was Drink at £5 billion. This was followed by Power generating machinery at £2.7 billion, Fish and shellfish at £1.2 billion, Medicinal & pharmaceutical products at £1 billion, and Professional & scientific instruments at £1 billion.
The decline in Scotland’s goods export value since the previous year was driven largely by a 55% drop in the exports of Organic chemicals, a 12% decrease in exports of Power generating machinery and a 27% decrease in Road vehicles. The largest of these decreases was the decrease in Organic chemical products, which accounted for around a quarter of the total decline.
Drink and Power generating machinery account for 42% of Scotland’s international goods exports. In 2024 exports of Drink accounted for 27% and Power generating machinery accounted for 15% of Scotland’s export value.

Since 2018 Scotland’s goods exports fell by 12%. This was driven by falls in Iron and steel (down 67%), Organic chemicals (down 71%) and Apparel & clothing (down 75%) which had the most impactful declines.
