International goods exports

In the year ending March 2025, the value of Scotland’s international goods exports decreased by 3% to a value of £20.8 billion since the previous year.

The commodity category with the highest export value in the year ending March 2025 was Drink at £4.9 billion. This was followed by Power generating machinery at £2.6 billion, General industrial machinery at £1.7 billion, Fish and shellfish at £1.3 billion, and Medicinal & pharmaceutical products at £1.1 billion.

The decline in Scotland’s goods export value since the previous year was driven largely by a 19% drop in the exports of Power generating machinery, a 56% decrease in exports of Organic chemicals and a 15% decrease in Medicinal & pharmaceutical products. The largest of these decreases was the decrease in Power generating machinery, which accounted for around a third of the total decline.

Drink and Power generating machinery account for 36% of Scotland’s international goods exports. In the year ending March 2025 exports of Drink accounted for 24% and Power generating machinery accounted for 12% of Scotland’s export value.

Since the year ending March 2019 Scotland’s goods exports fell by 15%. This was driven by falls in Power generating machinery (down 27%), Organic chemicals (down 72%) and Iron and steel (down 65%) which had the most impactful declines.
