Inflation Adjusted HMRC Regional Trade Statistics for Scotland Q1 2025

Goods imports

In the year ending March 2025 compared to the previous year Scotland’s goods imports decreased by 5% to a value of £20.5 billion.

The decrease was largely driven by imports of Power generating machinery (down 50%), Manufactures of metal (down 45%) and Road vehicles (down 24%). Power generating machinery was the largest decrease, and accounted for around two thirds of the overall decrease.

There were increases in General industrial machinery (up 22%), Animal feed (up 33%) and Electrical machinery & appliances (up 11%).

EU imports decreased by 2% between the year ending March 2025 and the previous year, driven largely by imports of Power generating machinery (down 55%). Imports from non-EU countries decreased by 7% over this period, which was driven by imports of Power generating machinery (down 48%).

Over the longer term Scotland’s imports have decreased (down 7% in the year ending March 2025 since the corresponding period in 2019). EU imports decreased by 14% over this period, while non-EU imports decreased by 3%.
