Independent Review of Adult Disability Payment: final report - easy read

The easy read version of the final report of the Independent Review of Adult Disability Payment, written by Edel Harris OBE.

A People’s Service

The research in this report shows that making Adult Disability Payment easier to access would make life better for those who need support or who are not able to get support at the moment.

The report recommends that the system should be more person-centred.

This means the views of people with experience of applying for Adult Disability Payment should be listened to when thinking about how to improve things.

The Scottish Government should make a plan to help people understand Adult Disability Payment more and how to apply for support.

This would help make sure people that are eligible for Adult Disability Payment get the support that they need.

There should be a plan to speak with people that are not always listened to and people that do not apply for support due to stigma.

Stigma means that some people might not ask for help because they feel ashamed or worried.

Money should be made available to allow charities and welfare organisations to support disabled people and share information on advice, advocacy and support services.

Social Security Scotland should always make sure people are treated with dignity, fairness and respect.

They should also take a trauma informed approach. This means understanding if someone has had a hard time before and making sure they feel safe and supported.

Everyone that is eligible for Adult Disability Payment should get the right amount and type of support. They should not have to wait too long for this.
