| Term | Description |

| Startup | a company owned by its founder(s), who will often have provided the business idea/know-how/intellectual property required to get the business off the ground. |
| Spinout | a startup company that is created based on intellectual property (IP) generated through a university’s research. The university has a share in the equity of the newly formed company. |
| Scale up | a company achieving average annual growth of 20% or more in turnover and/or employees over three years, with at least 10 employees at the beginning of the observation period.31 |
| Scottish Unicorn | a company valued over £1 billion that was founded and headquartered in Scotland. |
| Applied Research | is designed to solve specific, practical problems. It takes the discoveries made through basic research and uses them to develop new technologies, processes, or products and has more immediate, tangible outcomes. |
| Discovery Research | is driven by curiosity and the desire to expand human knowledge. It aims to improve scientific theories and is not typically directed towards any immediate commercial goals but instead focuses on creating new theories or modifying existing ones. |
| Knowledge Exchange | is the two-way exchange of knowledge, expertise, and capabilities between higher education institutions (HEIs) and external partners (businesses, government bodies, non-profits, and communities. |
| Female-Led Business | a business that is established and led by a woman. This includes businesses that are founded by women entrepreneurs, as well as those that are co-founded by women.32 |
