Introduction
This publication presents estimates of the value of international exports and exports to the rest of the UK for all sectors of the Scottish economy from 2008 to 2023. All current price estimates are unadjusted for inflation and measure the value of trade, not the volume of trade. Estimates of the ESS results in volume terms (also referred to as real terms) have also been included to assist with interpretation of current price estimates which span periods of high inflation. The methodology used to estimate the impact of inflation over the series is consistent with that used in the production of Scotland’s national accounts. This involves using sector-specific UK level deflators to adjust for inflation. Unless stated otherwise, all change over time is reported as percentage change in real terms.
The estimates exclude exports of oil and gas extracted from the UK Continental shelf. However, exports of services provided to the offshore oil and gas industry are included in the estimates of exports to the rest of the UK. Further information on the production of these statistics can be found in the methodology note.
Throughout this publication reference is made to the ‘pre-pandemic period’, ‘pre-EU withdrawal’ or ‘2018 comparator’. Such comparisons look at the performance of exports over a number of years in order to help understand export performance following coronavirus lockdowns, which saw a reduction in exports, as well as other economic impacts such as the UK withdrawal from the EU and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In this report, the reference year of 2018 has been selected as a relatively stable point in time prior to these impacts.
The estimates in this publication are likely to have small revisions in the future as more information becomes available.
Information from 2008 to 2023 is provided in the accompanying Excel tables. These include more detailed breakdowns by industry sector, destination and business size.
