Violence Prevention Framework for Scotland: CRWIA screening sheet

This child rights and wellbeing impact assessment (CRWIA) assesses the potential impact of the Violence Prevention Framework on children’s rights under the UNCRC and their wellbeing.

2. What aspects of the policy/measure will affect children and young people up to the age of 18?

Children and young people will be positively affected through the achievement of the overall vision and aims of the Framework, and through targeted engagement of the work being carried out through the actions of the Framework.

Children and young people may also be positively affected as a result of parents, carers or other family members participating in activities undertaken through the actions of the Framework.

A number of the actions are specifically targeted at children and young people and these continue to support:

Early intervention to prevent violence and reduce its harm to those who have been, or are at risk of becoming care experienced.

Addressing the effects of social media on violence.

Awareness raising and education to deter weapon carrying amongst young people

Allowing more young people to access help at an earlier stage and

Offering community based support for young people to prevent violence from escalating.

The investment in the Framework supports the work of Scottish Government funded violence prevention partners, all of whom work with children and young people. This includes education based interventions for effectively addressing violence, including knife crime at an early stage (Youth Link Scotland’s No Knives, Better Lives programme, Medics Against Violence Schools programme and Education Scotland’s Mentors in Violence Prevention programme), targeted support for young people at a time of crisis in their lives (Medics against Violence Youth Navigators) and healthy, positive engagement with Police Scotland and community based volunteering opportunities (Police Scotland Youth Volunteers). These programmes support the priority of ensuring young people are fully informed about the dangers and consequences of violence, tackling the perceptions of knife crime including the thought processes that lead a person to pick up a sharp weapon.
