Easy read summary of the Scottish Government Response to the Independent Review of Adult Disability Payment Final Report.

Processes That Work

These recommendations are about how people feel about applying for Adult Disability Payment and getting a decision.

The Independent Review said Social Security Scotland has done a good job at telling people more quickly if they have got Adult Disability Payment or not.

Within 3 months:

Social Security Scotland are going to keep working with groups that help disabled people so they can find out what disabled people think.

Thinking more about:

Telling people what Social Security Scotland is doing with their application for Adult Disability Payment. This is not an easy thing for Social Security Scotland to do. They will think about how they could do it.

There were lots of suggestions about application forms and letters.

We will think about what changes we could make to the application form and letters. We want to make sure any changes we make are helpful. So we will take time to speak to lots of different people about these changes.

Not working on:

The Scottish Government won’t be working on the suggestions about redeterminations.

People who think Social Security Scotland made the wrong decision about their Adult Disability Payment application can ask for a re-determination. That means someone new looks at the person’s application again and makes a new decision.

When people ask for a redetermination, Social Security Scotland will still look again at their whole application. This is to make sure people get all of the money they should get.

The time limit for Social Security Scotland to finish a redetermination will stay at 56 days.
