Scottish farm business income: annual estimates 2023-2024

Farm business level estimates of average incomes for 2023-2024. An Accredited Official Statistics publication for Scotland.

Mixed farm income falls from record year

The average income of mixed farms decreased by 52% (£46,800) in 2023-24 to £43,400. This decrease is mostly due to falls in output. In 2022-23 mixed farms saw their highest average incomes since 2012-13 the first year for which we have comparable data.

A line graph showing the farm income of mixed farms over time, compared to all farms.

Agricultural outputs decreased by 14% (£49,700), driven by a 24% (£28,600) drop in barley output and a 11% (£13,900) decrease in cattle output.

An increase in fertiliser costs of 20% (£8,300) contributed to a 3% (£10,300) rise in total input costs. This offset reductions in feed and fodder costs.

Mixed farms tend to make more money than the average farm, but experience fluctuations in performance over time. Mixed farms usually engage in complementary activities like growing crops to feed their cattle.
