Scottish Approach to Service Design

The vision for the Scottish Approach to Service Design is that the people of Scotland are supported and empowered to actively participate in the definition, design and delivery of their public services (from policy making to live service improvement).

Foreword

by Kate Forbes MSP, Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Gaelic

The message behind the Scottish Approach to Service Design is a simple but effective one. It describes how service design ideas and tools can help us explore and design future policies and services collaboratively to deliver better outcomes.

Of course times change, and in the years since it was originally published we have improved our understanding of how to embed the approach in organisations, and how to involve people and communities in designing the services they need and use. This update reflects that learning.

The Scottish Government’s Public Service Reform Strategy sets out commitments to change the system of public services to be more preventative, joined up and efficient. This updated Scottish Approach to Service Design sets out practical guidance and advice to support organisations to meet those commitments.

I would like to thank all those who have taken the ideas and principles of the Scottish Approach to Service Design into their organisations over the last few years to develop partnerships right across the public sector and hope this update will continue to support them in meeting the needs of the people and communities we serve.
