Scottish agriculture greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen use: 2024-25

Greenhouse gas emission estimates for the Scottish agriculture sector, agricultural subsectors and for average Scottish farms by farm type. Nitrogen use estimates for average Scottish farms by farm type.

Official Statistics in development.

Data and methodology

Data source

This report is based on estimates of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for Scottish agriculture, as reported in the Scottish Greenhouse Gas Statistics 2024  and average emission and nitrogen use estimates from the Farm Business Survey (FBS).

Information about the different data sources and coverage of the estimates in the report is displayed in the table below.

Average whole farm emissions by farm type

Farm Business Survey 2024-25 (weighted to cover commercial sized farms in  Scotland)

The 2024-25 sample is weighted to represent 10,200 farms. These farms account for 94% of the standard output of farms in Scotland that are in receipt of support payments.

Average emission intensity of specific products from farm enterprises (activities)

Farm Business Survey 2024-25 (not weighted and based on a sub-sample of farms)

Subset from the FBS sample of 402 farms in 2024-25.

Average farm level nitrogen use across different farm types.

Farm Business Survey 2024-25  (weighted to cover commercial sized farms in  Scotland)

The 2024-25 sample is weighted to represent 10,200 farms. These farms account for 94% of the standard output of farms in Scotland that are in receipt of support payments.
