First Children's Rights Scheme: child friendly version
Child friendly version of the first children's rights scheme as required under section 15 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024.
11. Children and young people’s other ideas
Children and young people suggested other actions to support children’s rights. However these have not been included in the Scheme. This is because other work is already helping with these issues.
For example, children and young people said that they should learn about their rights in schools.
UNICEF UK’s Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) programme is helping children and teachers to understand children’s rights. RRSA also supports schools to think about children’s rights in all that they do. The Scottish Government gave money to UNICEF UK for 3 years to help more schools to join the RRSA programme.
Children and young people also said that they want us to do more to help protect their rights when they are online:
“Make sure these commitments apply to online too.”
We will keep working with the United Kingdom Government and others to do all we can to protect children from online harm and uphold their rights.
We will also ask a group of Scottish Government senior leaders called the Online Safety Taskforce to help us think about what more can be done to keep children and young people in Scotland safe when they are online.
