Offshore Marine Protected Areas - fisheries management measures: SG response

Our official response to the 2024 public consultation on proposed fisheries management measures in Offshore Marine Protected Areas.

7. Implementation

The Scottish Government will proceed with the implementation of the fisheries management measures for offshore Marine Protected Areas. The relevant statutory order was laid before Scottish Parliament on 1 September 2025, with the measures coming into force on 16 October 2025. In advance of implementation, the Scottish Government are engaging with stakeholders, including the fishing industry, environmental organisations, and local communities, to provide clear guidance and ensure a shared understanding of the new measures. Public communications will be issued to raise awareness and support compliance.

A programme of monitoring and evaluation will assess the effectiveness of the measures in achieving conservation objectives. This will underpin an adaptive management approach, enabling adjustments where necessary based on additional evidence. The Scottish Government remains committed to ongoing collaboration with stakeholders to ensure the long-term sustainability and stewardship of Scotland’s marine environment.
