This report presents the number of people registered with a general practice in Scotland and diagnosed with one or more of 25 specific neurological conditions in 2026.
Annex A: Acronyms and Glossary
BoD: Burden of Disease. Burden of disease studies provide a consistent and comprehensive framework to explore how early death and ill-health affect a nation’s population, using the DALY measure.
DALYs: Disability-Adjusted Life Years, a composite measure used in Burden of Disease studies, comprising:

Ill-health (years lived with disability (YLD), or non-fatal burden).

Early/premature death (years of life lost (YLL), or fatal burden).
GP Editorial Board: the body which considers and approves requests for aggregate datasets from PCIS.
HSCP: Health and Social Care Partnership. There are 31 HSCPs in Scotland: they are responsible for integrating adult community health and social care services, including services for older people.
NACNC: National Advisory Committee for Neurological Conditions. The committee advises the Scottish Government on issues affecting people with neurological conditions in Scotland and provided oversight of commitments in the Neurological Care and Support: Framework for Action (2020-2025) (SG, 2019).
NHS: National Health Service Scotland. There are 14 NHS regional Health Boards in Scotland.
NRS: National Records of Scotland.
PCI: Primary Care Informatics: a group of general practitioners, practice managers and others with a special interest in health informatics.
PCIS: Primary Care Intelligence Service for Scotland: the new PHS national general practice data extraction and analytical service. It enables the authorised extraction of aggregate data from general practice clinical systems.
PHS: Public Health Scotland.
Read Codes: Enable a summary of an individual's medical record to be coded and stored in a computer system.
SBoD: Scottish Burden of Disease. The SBoD project has established a comprehensive framework for routinely quantifying the burden of disease for over 100 diseases and injuries in Scotland using the DALY measure.
SPIRE: Scottish Primary Care Information Resource. The system previously used by PHS to request and obtain authorised information from general practice clinical systems.
