Neurological Conditions: estimated prevalence in Scotland in 2026
This report presents the number of people registered with a general practice in Scotland and diagnosed with one or more of 25 specific neurological conditions in 2026.
2. Methodology
The neurological conditions included in this request for general practice data are those reported in the 2022 report. They were identified by the National Advisory Committee for Neurological Conditions (NACNC) prior to the 2022 data request to PHS. The dataset comprises total counts of patients registered at 1 May 2026 who had a diagnosis ever recorded for each specified condition.
Data from all 14 NHS regional Health Boards in Scotland are included in the data extract. Data from 864 general practices are included, representing 99.4% of patients registered across Scotland. Data were missing for nine practices. Of those, six practices routinely opt out of PCIS extracts, two practices had technical issues at the time of the extract, and errors were found in the data for one practice.
In contrast with the 2022 report, this report does not include:

Hospital admissions data. This data was not requested from PHS because of our confidence that coverage of general practice registered patients would be more comprehensive compared with the 2022 report.

Comparative estimates for some of the neurological conditions. Again, these are not provided because of the near comprehensive coverage of general practice registered patients in this 2026 report.
